RETA DOUBET
Reta an author and remarkable mother was born into a family
of ten; five girls and three boys. She was a lucky one, born an identical
twin. Growing up she and her twin had fun considering no one could tell them
apart, including her parents expect for their little sister. Her mother sewed
dresses for all the girls, always making the twins clothes identical. From the
leftover fabric scraps, her first sewing projects began at the age of ten with
dresses for her dolls. Reta’s folks owned and operated their family pottery
business where she learned to paint with her mother. Her favorite things to
paint at an early age were chicks and bunnies. As a child she also
learned to love cooking; helping her mother cook large family meals for Sunday
dinner. Saturday was completely spent baking pies, cakes, salads, and
more for Sunday dinner. As she grew her mother let her try new recipes for the family
meal, lighting a spark to her future. Later down the road Reta married George
and they started a family of their own. Her early sewing projects bloomed into
designing clothing for her daughters and grandchildren while sharing the
traditions from her childhood in the kitchen. Her fire continues to grow
with the addition of each grandchild. Today, she honors her mother Eileen with
treasured heirloom recipes in the Bittersweet Walnut Grove series.
